As you may know, a babies diaper can leak at night, so a good sheet protector can be a great idea for a busy mom. A sheet protector is simply a piece of cloth on the top and waterproof plastic on the other side. If your baby has leakage at night you can just take out the wet sheet protector and replace it with a new one.

You can also do this between two fitted sheets if you want to. Put the protector under the top sheet so it protects the bottom sheet. If your baby has an accident during the night, you can easily take off the top sheet and have a nice clean bottom one.

You may want to consider having your baby wear heavier pajamas at night so they will stay warm and not kick off the covers. You don't want to go out and buy several pairs of pajamas in the beginning for your baby. A couple of pairs will do fine for now.

Consider buying colored baby sheets due to the fact that stains are inevitable. White sheets may look nice, but may not be practical. As far as a pillow goes, don't even think about it! There is no need for a baby to have a pillow. It is dangerous and your baby can easily suffocate. Babies are not able to lift their heads enough to even use a pillow. They also sleep much better laying flat.

In some cases another sign and symptom of teething will be difficulty in getting sound sleep. Your baby may wake up in the middle of the night due to the pain.

How to Care for your Uncircumcised Baby's Foreskin

It is usual that a baby's foreskin will not retract (pull back) and the foreskin may not actually fully retract for years. Mothers don't have personal experience of how to clean a boy's foreskin and are often unsure of what to do.

The foreskin is attached to the underlying tissue of the penis. Over time, this naturally separates so that eventually the foreskin will fully retract. The cells that are shed when the foreskin separates make a white debris called smegma. This is expelled through the opening in the foreskin.

The following guideline will help you:
Firstly, never force the foreskin back. Forcing may cause a tear on the lining of the foreskin. Not only will this hurt your baby, but when the tear heals, the healed tissue will be tighter. If this keeps happening, your baby will end up with a tight foreskin which will not retract (pull back). When you are bathing your baby, gently wash the penis. Remove any secretions (smegma) that may have gathered at the tip of the foreskin. Wash any soap away. Do try and wash inside the foreskin - just wash away anything that is visible As your little boy grows, teach him to gently wash his penis during bathing but never to force the foreskin back. Eventually, the foreskin will fully retract. At that time, which may be about puberty, teach your son to gently pull the foreskin back fully while bathing to clean it. The foreskin should then be pulled back in its normal position

There are no medical reasons for routine circumcision. Most boys are circumcised for religious reasons.

Sometimes, the foreskin is tight and balloons out when your son pees. Occasionally, this condition (phimosis) will require circumcision. If your son has a very tight foreskin at age 5 years, he may need a circumcision. However, this can be avoided by non-surgical management with steroid cream. The steroid cream (usually Betamethasone) is applied to the tip of the foreskin three or four times a day for a month. Most boys who use this treatment will not require circumcision, which involves an operation with an anesthetic.

Occasionally, boys will get an infection under the foreskin, called balanitis. If this keeps happening, there will likely be some scarring of the inside of the foreskin which cause a tightness that may require circumcision. Again, washing away any smegma that you see may prevent this happening. Steroid cream used in the manner described above may also prevent the need for circumcision.

Occasionally the smegma, that is formed by the debris of cells as the foreskin separates from the underlying tissue, will cause a collection under the skin lining the penis. This is called a smegma pearl and looks like a white collection (a bit like a pearl) on the shaft of the penis. Don't worry as this will eventually disappear by itself and no treatment is required.

Circumcision involves cutting the foreskin off. This involves an operation and that required an anesthetic - these have a risk and so the decision to have a circumcision should involve a risk assessment - only undertake the operation if the benefit will outweigh the risk.

There is evidence that circumcised boys get less urinary tract infections than uncircumcised boys, but the risk of urinary tract infection is so low in most boys, that being uncircumcised doesn't matter. The risk of the operation for circumcision cancels out any benefit from preventing a urinary tract infection in most boys. Very few boys get a urinary tract infection, circumcised or not.

Careful attention to cleaning the penis and foreskin without forcing it back as outlined above should prevent your baby son having any problems. If in doubt, leave it alone. The foreskin will naturally retract in time.

When Can You Feed a Baby Eggs?

Allergies to eggs are common and babies can sometimes have an allergic reaction. This allergic reaction to eggs is due to the body's immune system not being able to process the egg white protein. In some cases it will be the protein in the yolk that causes this adverse reaction. Allergies are also known to be hereditary.

The risk of salmonella is also a worry, naturally. After a bit of research I found out that children aged four or below are at a slightly higher risk of contracting the salmonella virus than other age groups but, surprisingly, not necessarily contracting it from eggs but from other risks such as riding in a shopping cart next to meat or poultry. That is something I have never even thought about as a parent!

I discovered that despite my worries, it is generally considered safe to feed eggs to babies as long as you follow these simple guidelines:

DO NOT start weaning your baby onto egg yolks until they are around 8 months old - your babies immune system may not have developed enough to recognise the proteins in the yolk until this time. DO NOT start weaning your baby onto egg whites until they are at least one year old - your babies immune system may not have developed enough to recognise the proteins in the white until this time. DO ensure your eggs are high-quality free-range and organic - The better kept the chickens are, the risk of their eggs containing salmonella drops considerably. DO ensure the egg is fully cooked before use - cooking the egg destroys the salmonella, if there is any. DO be sure you wash your hands after handling the egg and it's shell before you touch or feed your baby. DO be sure you test your baby for an allergic reaction by following the four day rule - by feeding a small amount of your egg weaning recipe to your baby and waiting for around four days and seeing if they allergically react.

My conclusion is to not worry too much about feeding eggs to babies or using them as a weaning food as long as you follow the guidelines above. There's a very good reason too as chicken eggs are packed with nutrients in the form of vitamins, proteins and fats.

If you still have concerns however I would definitely recommend talking to your GP or doing some more research into this.

Newborn Photography - Tips for Getting Great Newborn Pictures

Your child is a brand new baby for an incredibly short time, and what better way to help you remember it than through beautifully crafted photographs. There are a few things you can do to help your photographer capture priceless photos of your little angel.

You can capture the greatest images of your new arrival during the first two weeks of life. Some newborn photographers have an "on call" system. You let the photographer know when your due date is and they anticipate a phone call from you sometime within a week of your due date. Setting up a session within the first two weeks is one of the best ways you can help your photographer get phenomenal images of your little baby.

Many newborn photographers like to take pictures of baby in his or her birthday suit or a simple diaper. This will bring all the attention to your beautiful child's face and tiny details, like baby toes, little fingers, and wrinkly back. Newborn pictures really can't be complete without getting at least a few with mom and dad. You'll want to remember how tiny your little one was when he or she was first born. Many sessions last between three and five hours to make sure baby is posed just so and that he or she stays sound asleep.

Lastly if you have anything special to your child, like a handmade quilt from grandma or a soft pillow or blanket, feel free to bring it to the session. Most photographers are more than happy to work in these little touches that will make your new baby's photos all the more unique and special.

By keeping these simple things in mind, you are sure to go into your newborn session fully prepared for what to expect. Just remember to keep things simple with your clothes and baby's and that a full belly equals a happy baby. And with a happy baby you are sure to get images that will remind you of this special time in your child's life for years to come.

Christening Gowns - From a Baby's Point of View

Wow! This is quite a welcome I'm getting in this new world. I have to say that these past few days have been a bit overwhelming for me. It has been a big change for me but I'm getting used to it. I figure it's shaping up to be a pretty good life.

Well, thanks mostly to MOM! Gee, she's pretty special! Of course, I've known her before today but, wow, it's sure nice to be sharing this new adventure with such a nice lady. I don't think I could have done it without her - and let's not forget - my new Dad and those little people who run around and play games. My sister and brother - I think that's what Mom called them yesterday. I can't wait to get on my feet and start running too. That 'playing' thing looks like lots of fun.

But hey, I have something special going on today. Can't you tell - by the way I'm dressed? I'm not up on all the details but I've listened a bit and figured out it's about new beginnings. Wow, you get tons of hugs and kisses, and people make a really big fuss over you when you're starting a new beginning. I can get used to this!

Anyway, in case you don't know, it's all about a christening. It seems to be about something out of this world. And you sure get dressed up pretty snazzy for this special day. They call this a christening gown. It's really soft and I am glad it doesn't make me itchy. I think my gown is organza. Isn't it adorable - all floaty and nice! I heard Mom trying to make up her mind about the gown. It seems like they come in all kinds of soft stuff like satin and silk and cotton.

I'm glad it doesn't make me too hot, but my Mom - she thinks of everything. Here, look, there's a christening blanket if I get cold but I don't think I will on this warm day. But Mom says she likes to be prepared. She's so sweet!

Isn't my christening gown really super though? Look at those ribbons down there! Oops, I can't reach them. I think there's even some on the back of my gown. Gee, I wish I could see back there. Hey, look at this cool stuff like flowers - embroidery - at least that's what one of my new relatives called it - exquisite embroidery.

Yes, my Mom found me a 2-piece flower embroidered organza christening dress. See the shiny trim on my sleeves - satin, it's called. There's even a sash and a hat. I can take them off or leave them on. I think I'll leave them on. And check out my little booties and ruffled socks!

I'm mostly in white but I see a little pink down there on my pretty socks. Oh, and did I tell you the best part, I get a new name today! Sorry I can't tell you what it is. We didn't announce it yet but it's a pretty name. My Mom and Dad picked it out, but they ran it by me too, and I cooed my approval.

Yes, it's a pretty special day! Lots of stuff to think about with this new life and all! I feel like a 'pink princess' today but I might not be a princess when I grow up. Maybe I'll explore new worlds or run a country or run a marathon maybe - when I learn how to stand on my own two feet. But my Mom already told me I can be whatever I want and I plan to follow her advice. She's a smart lady and this is one baby who values Mom's point of view.

And she's got good fashion sense, too. These Pink Princess christening gowns are awesome - and not just for girls! Nope, I have a little new cousin who just got one of their tuxedos. Everyone is 'oohing' and 'aahing' over him too but that's ok. There's enough love in this world for us all to share! Well, see you later! Got to pick up my name now! Bye!
